Spirits and beverage branding
TAVERN is an independent spirits and beverage branding agency based in New York. We develop strategy, naming, visual identity, packaging and brand experiences for whiskey, bourbon, canned cocktails and other beverage brands.
Our Modern Heritage approach draws on a brand's provenance, recognizable assets and cultural meaning to create a distinctive contemporary identity. Our public portfolio includes projects for Suntory Global Spirits, Old Overholt, Old Grand-Dad, Crow 86, Waterbird and Flying Embers.
From the bottle to the brand world
A beverage brand needs a clear reason to be chosen and remembered. Its name, label, packaging architecture and communications should reinforce that reason wherever people encounter it.
TAVERN connects strategy with design across individual releases, line extensions, portfolios and physical experiences. The work can involve refining an established whiskey identity, creating a new canned cocktail brand world or bringing a distillery's history into a space people can visit.
Selected spirits and beverage work
Old Overholt 250: heritage whiskey packaging
For Old Overholt's commemorative release celebrating America's 250th anniversary, TAVERN researched historical bottles, advertising, documents and ephemera. The research informed packaging that brought together different chapters of the whiskey brand's history while preserving its recognizable identity.
The project demonstrates archival research, limited-edition packaging and visual identity for Suntory Global Spirits.
Old Grand-Dad 7 Year Bottled in Bond: portfolio consistency
TAVERN refined the packaging and visual identity of Old Grand-Dad 7 Year Bottled in Bond to align it with the wider portfolio. Typography, hierarchy and label architecture brought the expression into a coordinated system while retaining the cues familiar to its drinkers.
The project demonstrates bourbon packaging design and the careful evolution of an established brand.
Crow 86: naming and bourbon identity
For a new Old Crow line extension, TAVERN developed the Crow 86 name, packaging and visual identity. Archival bottles and advertising informed the wordmark, typography and redrawn crow emblem. The design created a distinct expression within the brand's heritage.
Waterbird: canned cocktail branding
TAVERN developed a brand world for Waterbird rooted in Charlottesville and collegiate camaraderie. Strategy, visual identity and packaging connected the canned cocktails with the social occasions surrounding reunions, tailgates and time with friends.
The bird icon became a more expressive mascot, supported by distinctive typography, colors and a coordinated system across flavors.
Overholt Stateroom: an immersive spirits experience
TAVERN designed and built the Overholt Stateroom in partnership with West Overton Village Museum and Beam Suntory, now Suntory Global Spirits. The space combines a tasting bar, lounge and historical artifacts to bring the brand's story into a physical experience.

Modern Heritage for beverage brands
For an established spirits brand, its archives can contain the foundations of a distinctive future: a forgotten wordmark, a historic label, a founder's story or an unmistakable symbol.
TAVERN researches those assets and assesses how they can support the brand's positioning today. Old Overholt, Old Grand-Dad and Crow 86 show different applications of that thinking, from commemorative storytelling to portfolio consistency and a new line extension.
For newer beverage brands, the same emphasis on recognition and longevity guides the creation of a brand world and assets that can grow over time.
