Celebrating The Whiskey That Helped Build America
Celebrating The Whiskey That Helped Build America
America's 250th anniversary presented a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Overholt, one of the country's oldest whiskey brands. With a history deeply intertwined with the story of America itself, the commemorative bottle needed to celebrate not only the nation's milestone, but Overholt's enduring role within it. Taking a Modern Heritage approach to the project, we immersed ourselves in the brand's rich history, uncovering authentic artifacts that would become the foundation of the design.
Rather than relying on the expected visual language of Americana, flags and patriotic clichés, we looked inward. If every whiskey brand could celebrate America, we wanted to create a bottle that only Overholt could. The inspiration wouldn't come from symbols of the country, but from the brand that helped shape it.
Our research became equal parts historical investigation and treasure hunt. We explored the archives at West Overton, worked alongside the local historical society, dug through Overholt's own archives and expanded TAVERN's growing private collection of rare Overholt bottles, advertisements, signage and ephemera accumulated over years of working with the brand. We traveled throughout western Pennsylvania, uncovering forgotten assets and piecing together the visual history of Overholt firsthand. The process felt somewhere between an archaeological dig and an episode of American Pickers.
Instead of drawing inspiration from a single era of the brand, we created a visual collage spanning more than two centuries of Overholt history. Historic labels, newspaper clippings, distillery documents, land deeds and archival graphics were carefully curated and woven together throughout the package, allowing each generation of the brand to contribute to the final design. The result is a bottle that feels as though it has been built over 200 years rather than designed all at once.
While the commemorative graphics celebrate the brand's remarkable history, the overall architecture remains unmistakably Overholt. The existing brand system was respected and preserved, allowing the limited-edition storytelling to enhance rather than overshadow the core identity. This careful balance ensures the bottle feels collectible without ever becoming novelty.
Every design decision was guided by authenticity. Rather than inventing history, we uncovered it. Rather than decorating the bottle with patriotic symbolism, we celebrated America's 250th anniversary through the lens of one of the brands that helped build the country.
The final package embodies TAVERN's Modern Heritage philosophy. Before we become designers, we become historians. Through obsessive research, physical archive building and a deep respect for brand DNA, we uncover the stories already embedded within a brand and bring them forward for a new generation. The result is a commemorative bottle that doesn't simply celebrate America's history. It celebrates Overholt's place within it.
